Jools Abrams

Talliston Writer in Residence 2017-2018

Julie (Jools Abrams) is originally from the North West, but has lived with her family in Hertfordshire for over twenty years. Inspired by generations of family anecdotalists, she has been writing stories since she could hold a crayon. An award-winning writer, she won the Wasafiri International Writing Prize 2017 and has performed readings at The Word Factory in London. She has an MA in Creative Writing and Children’s Literature from Birkbeck, where Michael Rosen was her tutor.

As a member of SCBWI she writes for Words and Pictures, their online magazine. She writes short stories for adults and children, novels for Young Adults and is published by Walker Books in their Book of Bedtime Stories. She has written feature articles for local magazines and national websites, and screenplays, mentored by The Script Factory, London. In 2011, she published a creative non-fiction book on outdoor pursuits, She Who Dares.

She’s been a qualified primary teacher for over twenty-five years and now tutors and works with local organisations. She’ll be curating the writers circle at Talliston and running writing workshops.

Writer in Residence

Become a creative part of the house and gardens.

At the heart of Talliston House & Gardens' labyrinth of inspirational locations, times and places is a showcase of the power of our imagination – and the unlocking of the secret that lies within all of us. Talliston is committed to continuing that journey, to inspire, support and encourage people to pursue creative, fulfilling lives – and in this new chapter, we have created a series of residencies to further that mission.

The Talliston Writer-in-Residence programme was established to provide resources for a writer over the course of one almanack year (October to October). It sets out to use Talliston’s interiors to motivate and encourage writers, providing an inspirational space to write, research and create. Along with the Artist-in-Residence and Artisan-in-Residence roles, the Writer-in-Residence will be joining a community committed to creative excellence.
